A fisherman this week confessed to killing the journalist and his traveling companion. Phillips traveled 600 miles by boat and 45 miles on foot to document Indigenous contact with isolated indigenous groups.

The two guys traveled to Lago do Jaburu to interview indigenous people and planned to continue their adventure to the So Rafael village, where they would meet with a local fisherman. The disappearance happened on the road between the hamlet and the Atalaia do Norte municipality.
